Woven Splendor from Timbuktu to Tibet: Exotic Rugs and Textiles from New York Collectors
11 April - 17 August, 2008
The exhibition Woven Splendor at the New-York Historical Society celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Hajji Baba Club, the
oldest rug club in United States. This Hajji Baba anniversary is the
reason why the next American Conference on Antique Rugs & Textiles,
ACART 9, will be held in 2009 and not as earlier planned in 2008.
The exhibition will tell the story of this New York based rug club and
there will be around 75 rugs, costumes or oriental textiles belonging to
club members on display. Photos from the early 20th century depicting
Oriental rugs in the homes of the Club founders will also be on display.
The Opening Gala Reception will be on 11 April 2008.
A symposium, connected with the exhibition, will be held 12 April 2008.
Among speakers are Jon Thompson, Walter Denny, Thomas Farnham, Daniel Walker, Michael
Franses, and Louise Mackie. The speakers will focus on objects woven for domestic
purposes and trade from Persia, Turkey, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
Read more about registration to the Opening Gala Reception, the Symposium,
and a Sunday Brunch at www.hajji75.org.
On 13 April there will be a walk-throughs with the curators. On 17
April Mary Jo Otsea will be moderator of a roundtable discussion in a panel
of collectors and dealers who will offer expert insights in the complex world of antique
rugs and textiles.
The exhibition catalogue is written by Dr. Jon Thompson and will be
available April 2008.
