This third century Sasanian foundation was ravaged by the Mongols and Afghans and reached its apogee in the 16th century when it became the capital of the Safavids. It is to this epoch that the origins of carpet manufacture, not to mention brocade and velvet weaving, can be dated. Although some art historians would like to see Seljuk elements in early Kazvin pieces, it is probably more correct to speak of a style derived from Kashan, rather than an autonomous one, even though the individual carpets were often superior to Kashan pieces. The magnificent Kazvin of palatial size very finely knotted in wonderfully lustrous kork neckwool, and memorably rich in terms of both colours and design. The peach colour field is super imposed by a superbly ornate stem lattice system linking diverse classical palmette forms of exceptional inner detail and clarity of draughtsmanship, with a subsidiary scheme of different motifs, rosettes, floral sprays, leaves and other ornaments from the ancient Kashan repertoire. Preserved in excellent condition, with all the colours at the pitch of their beauty, this is a Kazvin
